The meaning of Aso Ebi
Aso ebi, a cherished tradition among the Yoruba people of Nigeria, represents more than just clothing. It symbolises unity, identity, and celebration. Economic historian Ayodele Olukoju notes that aso ebi gained novelty in the 1920s, during a post-World War I economic boom driven by higher prices for products like palm oil.
By the 1950s, the tradition of wearing aso ebi had extended to women's organisations, known as "egbes", which would attend ceremonies and anniversaries in matching attire. This practice not only signified close friendship but also reflected personal affluence, with groups often competing in terms of the quality and originality of their uniforms.

Today, aso ebi has become a significant urban phenomenon, spreading to other cultures across the world and becoming a staple at various social functions. It continues to symbolise solidarity and community, while also serving as a canvas for personal expression and creativity.
